When I say, I DON’T KNOW WHAT I WAITED FOR TO SEW A SWIMSUIT….Well I finally did and I am in love! This swimsuit by #OpianSantis the Santis swimsuit is a great one to hack.
This is my inspiration look. I didn’t want to make it exactly like that as the one I made is a wearable muslin. The next one will be similar to this one and have more ruffles and flair.
I started with the lining. The pink fabric I had though I loved it, it was very light and needed to have some backing that would work for the ruffle I was going for.
I chose a scuba knit in grey and thought it went well with the hot pink. After sewing the lining together, I sewed the swimsuit and then put them together wrong side together and serged it to close. The serger helps to keep the stretch of the pattern. If you don’t have a serger you can use a zig zag stitch. After you have serged take elastic and then pin to the wrong side of the fabric. After you have pinned fold along edge and stitch elastic down in place using a zig zag stitch.
To get the flounce choose any pattern that has a flounce piece and trace it to your desired length and width. I chose McCall’s 6902 for the flounce.
To get the desired look for the flounce, I used two pieces instead of one for the look that I wanted. I cut one about 2 inches longer and used that for the bottom flounce.
To keep the fabric stable I used the neoprene as a base and I also sewed a few lines down on both edges from end to end. This gave a nice detail. To add the flounce sew both pieces together and then sew down on desired edge of bathing suit. I chose the middle part of the V and along the left shoulder till it stopped. Sew down right on top of the bathing suit. I didn’t have any issues with sewing the fabric. For thicker areas I went slow on the machine and used my handwheel.
